The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has recognized McDonald's (NYSE: MCD) safety leadership for children by presenting the Golden Arches the federal watchdog agency's highest safety award.
At a Washington D.C. event CPSC Chairman Ann Brown presented the "Chairman's Commendation" to Jack Greenberg, McDonald's Chairman and CEO.
McBaby, a one-of-a-kind, life-like mannequin developed for McDonald's by Ram Consulting, is a computerized "virtual child" that was given to the CPSC by McDonald's earlier this year to help enhance America's official safety oversight.
The high-tech, multi-million dollar McBaby recreates breathing, chewing and swallowing functions that can identify potential product safety standards better than any technology yet devised.
"This generous loan by McDonald's adds to our arsenal in combating injuries and deaths to children from consumer products," said CPSC Chairman Ann Brown. "It takes product safety into the 21st century."
McDonald's and the CPSC have teamed up on other family safety programs including a national Bike Helmet Safety Campaign.
"The CPSC's adoption of McBaby is part of McDonald's ongoing commitment to be a socially responsible neighbor in every aspect of our business," said Jack Greenberg. "McBaby is a living, breathing example of our mission to give back to the communities that give us so much. Having a safety partner like the CPSC is not only an honor, it is also an invaluable opportunity to help save kids' lives."
Chairman Brown initiated the commendation program to recognize substantial contributions to product safety by individuals, companies or groups for one- time, ongoing or multiple actions.
