The National Audubon Society has honored McDonald's environmental achievements by presenting the Golden Arches its Environmental Leadership Award for 2001.
Citing more than a decade of environmental action, Audubon President John Flicker praised McDonald's for its green track record.
"McDonald's implements the highest environmental standards," said Mr. Flicker. "They work to educate consumers on important environmental standards such as litter, recycling and natural resource conservation in classrooms, communities and McDonald's restaurants. With more than 28,000 restaurants serving more than 43 million people a day in 120 countries McDonald's as a business leader demonstrates to the world true corporate responsibility and leadership."
The Audubon Leadership Award recognizes the recipient for either a single, extraordinary feat, or a long record of significant contributions to conservation.
"The name Audubon is synonymous with environmental protection and wildlife preservation. McDonald's is honored by this recognition and pledges to continue in the spirit of this legendary organization's leadership," said Jack Greenberg, McDonald's Chairman and CEO, who accepted the award at a New York City event. "We will continue to learn from our partnerships with Audubon, Environmental Defense, Conservation International, Keep America Beautiful, and many other leadership groups who share our cooperative approach to help make a difference on environmental issues."
Since 1990, McDonald's (NYSE: MCD) has purchased more than $3 billion worth of products made from recycled materials for use in its 13,000 U.S. restaurants. During that time McDonald's eliminated 150,000 tons of packaging by redesigning or reducing the amounts of material used to make straws, napkins and food packaging. Additionally, McDonald's has recycled more than one million tons of corrugated cardboard.
